Del Sol’s football team is in the Sunrise Region championship game for the fourth straight year.
And it’s hard to imagine the Dragons getting there without senior Dezerick Reed.
“Dezerick has been the heart and soul of our football team,” said Del Sol coach Preston Goroff, whose team hosts Basic in the Sunrise title game at 1 p.m. Saturday. “He is the motivational leader, he is the vocal leader, and he actually backs everything up on the field.”
Reed highlighted the All-Southeast League team released by coaches this week. He was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player and also was a first-team all-league selection at outside linebacker.
Reed has rushed for 1,885 yards and 21 touchdowns this season.
“He’s extremely tough, deceptively fast and very, very reliable,” Goroff said.
Reed has been a force on both sides of the ball, where he switches between running back and linebacker, despite averaging 23.5 carries per game. He has had six games of 25 or more carries.
“He doesn’t come off the field for us,” Goroff said. “Exceptional kids do that. There’s no doubt that he’s exceptional.”
Reed has had plenty of impact on defense. He leads the Dragons in sacks with 12½ and is second in tackles with 83.
But his offensive production has been the biggest surprise. Reed had just 15 carries last season as the team’s backup fullback.
But with the graduation of Derek Eamon and fullback Jon Kirschbaum and the transfer of Ernest Hall to Palo Verde, Reed was forced to step into a starring role. Eamon, Kirschbaum and Hall combined to rush for 3,857 yards last season.
“He surprised me as much as he surprised anybody,” Goroff said. “When he had his opportunities, he really shined.”
Liberty linebacker Samson Toalei, who helped the Patriots to their first playoff appearance, was named the Southeast Defensive MVP.
Goroff was named the Southeast Coach of the Year.
Desert Pines took the top two individual awards in the Northeast League. Wide receiver Eric Tuiloma (45 catches, 817 yards, 11 touchdowns) was the Offensive MVP, and linebacker Koerris Berry was the Defensive MVP.
Canyon Springs’ Hunkie Cooper was the Northeast Coach of the Year.
In the Northwest League, Cimarron-Memorial’s James Poole (1,678 rushing yards, 20 touchdowns) was the Offensive MVP, and Legacy linebacker William Purcell took the defensive honor.
Legacy’s Dave Snyder was named Coach of the Year after leading the Longhorns to the league title.
In the Southwest, Bishop Gorman tight end Xavier Grimble (37 catches, 665 yards, eight touchdowns) was the offensive MVP, and Durango defensive tackle Eric Underhill was the Defensive MVP.
Durango’s Gary Maki and Desert Oasis’ Faron Seibel were co-Coaches of the Year in the Southwest.

K.C. wrote on December 16, 2009 04:14 AM: Congrats to all of those ex jaguars from who are on these list! The jags just kicked but. The original badboys. MOOKIES MOM wrote on December 05, 2009 11:12 AM: Cograts Dezerick Baby. you deserve it. I cant believe Goroff said something nice about you. We know what that means. You were the one that took your team where it is today. It certainly was all skill. We love you! Mookie, Big Marc, Kayla, Baby Hall, and Me. TheTruth wrote on December 04, 2009 12:21 PM: Everyone needs to understand the selection process. Each coach emails a list of his stud players and why they should be first team. You need to understand that the burden is on the HEAD COACH to explain why HIS guy is the best by using stats, size, or rep(Xavier Grimble OFF MVP ring a bell?!). Now if your coach doesnt pitch a guy well cause he assumes everyone should know his guy is the best(Gorman K) and another coach pushes his guy hard and presents a great argument(Durango K) then that guy may lose out. Most coaches have a general knowledge of who the best players are. But he may not know that your safety is leading the conference in ints or leads all safties in tackles. Its the Head Coaches job to let the other coaches know that fact. So as they say. Don't Hate the Playa. Hate the Game! antramp wrote on November 28, 2009 05:32 AM: I would like to express my approval on the selection of Angelo Bianco, D.T. from Desert Oasis , I watched him play against Bishop Gorman. He was out weighed by at least 60 pounds, yet still got through the offensive line. He played with all of his heart, and it turned out to be a very good showing for his small stature. I am sure next year he will light up the field again for Desert Oasis. silver lining wrote on November 27, 2009 11:38 AM: it don't matter to gorman anyways! they goin to da ship. no matter what happens politics always gonna be in the mix. and if a lotta players bein gassed up by these lists...so what. maybe it will help them go somewhere for college or at least get some looks. and no matter what YOU think, somebody somewhere is giving credit to Nevada rankings! so RANK ON YALL!! LVFBFAN/BBFAN wrote on November 27, 2009 10:58 AM: First of all I am not a Bishop Gorman Fan at all, but there should have been more Gorman players on the Southwest squad 1st and 2nd team period. This voting of players needs to be reviewed.Nevada athletics has to many politics involved.I give a little to no credit to Nevada rankings of players or teams, alot of players are being gased up by these honors that really don't have any merit due to the fact these honors are politically motivated. Pat the Patriot wrote on November 27, 2009 09:20 AM: Congratulations to Coach Muraco at Liberty! First year as Head Coach and took the Patriots to the 2nd round of playoffs. Liberty has typically been a 2 win team each season. Last season they improved to 4 wins and then this year all the way into the 2nd round of playoffs. This football program has seriously improved just in the last year. I think Coach Muraco should be the Coach of the Year! Nice job! wiseguy wrote on November 27, 2009 08:15 AM: DXYL, aside from those you've mentioned, (and I see someone has put up Ron Lyles and Kip Canyon) there was also Vegas QB Hasaan Henderson who was a star receiver for the Island Warriors, Desert Oasis LB Franics Hunkin who was our shutdown Corner and Nick Unaite LB for Spring Valley who was a monster Fullback. When we had to play under a few different names, we also coached DP's Leon Hayes and Coronado's Zane Bradley. Some former Island Warrior honorable-mentions who should have made the All League list: Liberty's P.J. Taeao OG, Niko Kapeli RB, Teu Tai RB, Albert Tai LB, Seth McDermott DT, Gorman QB Jarrett 'Anu' Solomon, and Foothill QB Parker Riggin. It's great to see all these Island Warrior boys doing well throughout the valley. I hope football becomes a vehicle for greater things in their lives. As for the difference between this All League list and other lists, I'm just thankful they're on someone's list. May all the Island Warriors alumni find great success on and off the field! Remember, Hit the pads HARD..Hit the books HARDER! IDUB wrote on November 26, 2009 11:05 PM: all these young men are deserving of their honors!!! good job fellas... btw, dxyl is right, when the coaches are watching tape and planing their game strategy, they see who they have to stop or double team so on and so forth...so the coaches picks are pretty fair,...NPR/Rivals might have a different way of picking their lists...once again great job guys!!!
