FIELDER'S CHOICES: You have to love Gaels' chances against California power

It’s an unusual week for scheduling because of the Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah, so don’t forget which day your team is playing.

If you’re a fan of Bishop Gorman or small-school football, your team’s game is Friday. Even if you’re not a fan of Gorman or small-school football, those games are still tonight.

All other Class 4A schools have been moved to Saturday at various times. Check nevadapreps.com for the complete schedule.

With no Thursday Night Lights, Gorman has the game of the week with a highly anticipated 7 p.m. matchup against Servite (Calif.) on ESPNU (Cox 320).

If you go, bonus points if you take an “I LOVE FIELDER” sign and get ESPNU to put it on camera.

Just don’t ask me for any fabulous prizes ... or a parking pass.

And a hearty shana tova to the rest of Class 4A. Save a bagel for me.

Servite (4-0) at Bishop Gorman (5-1)

The Friars are unbeaten, but they haven’t played far from Anaheim.

The Gaels, ranked No. 7 by Rivals, should be favored on paper, but No. 38 Servite, the third-highest ranked team in California, won’t go quietly.

Gaels quarterback Jarrett Solomon should have to play the full four quarters tonight, and running back Shaquille Powell will need to bring his “A” game to keep the Friars off balance.

When those two are rolling, Gorman can hang with any team in the country.

Including this one ... Gorman by 3.

Legacy (2-2, 2-2) at Cimarron-Memorial (3-2, 2-2)

With two losses each in Northwest play, both teams face a critical week.

Running back D’Andre Hughes is becoming a star for Legacy and could eat up yardage again this week.

Cimarron counters with Demaryae Williams, and the Spartans will look to feed him the rock early and often.

Fireworks can happen any time one of those players touches the ball.

Pass attempts? Take the under ... Legacy by 5.

Eldorado (1-3, 0-2) at Desert Pines (0-4, 0-2)

Four straight losses to start the season, and Desert Pines’ morale is about as low as the percentages of completing a fake punt.

The Jaguars can restart their season now, and Leon Hayes has the speed to lead a five-game winning streak into the playoffs. First, he has to get past a couple of Nihipalis at Eldorado.

Desert Pines will need some help to host a playoff game, but anything can happen just by making the postseason.

This will help ... Desert Pines by 14.

Del Sol (3-1, 1-0) at Liberty (3-1, 1-0)

Is there anything Niko Kapeli can’t do? He runs for touchdowns, he snags passes, he pulls down interceptions. And all while the Patriots trail by multiple touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

This is a key matchup in determining the top seed in the Southeast League.

For Del Sol, that means plenty of all-purpose player Chris Marshall.

Last year’s game was an overtime thriller that led to league and region titles for Liberty.

That’s setting a high standard ... Liberty by 2.

Coronado (2-2, 0-2) at Green Valley (3-1, 2-0)

Jacob Olim gave the Gators an air complement to add to Aaron Love’s blistering rushing attack last week.

The Southeast should be wary of Green Valley because of it.

The Gators looked like a playoff contender in handing Foothill its first loss, and could play themselves further into the postseason picture with a win.

First, they have to get past Coronado’s Christopher Johnson.

Feel the love ... Green Valley by 10.

Sierra Vista (1-3, 1-2) at Clark (1-3)

If nothing else, Clark’s used the first four games to find a playmaker.

The Chargers even picked up two, but both have the same last name in McKinney: brothers Marquise and Deyon.

This is a chance for the Chargers to right the ship after consecutive losses to Gorman and Durango.

The McKinney brothers will take advantage of it ... Clark by 9.

Palo Verde (5-0, 4-0) at Cheyenne (4-0, 3-0)

The Desert Shields are off to a fast start after a rare non-playoff year in 2010, and Myloe Lewis has Cheyenne dreaming of a return to the postseason.

The trio of Lewis, Tyler Spight and Kenneth Counts have combined for 1,331 rushing yards on the young season.

But Palo Verde isn’t the same as Legacy, Cimarron, Virgin Valley and Faith Lutheran.

Cheyenne can make a case to be included in the conversation for a home playoff game with a good result Friday.

I said 'good,’ not 'miraculous’ ... Palo Verde by 10.

Boulder City (1-3) at Virgin Valley (4-1)

It’s finally time for the regular season in the Class 3A Southern League.

Which means that after Friday, there are only two games left in 3A Southern play.

The calendar may be shortened, but there’s still plenty of talent to go around.

Humberto Urias has the arm and the legs to lead the Bulldogs on a run, and everyone in Mesquite knows it.

Boulder City showed promise after blowing out The Meadows in Week 1, but the Eagles haven’t found their groove since.

The good thing about a three-team league? It’s easy to spot the two most important games of the season.

This must be one of them ... Virgin Valley by 12.
