Johnathan Loyd has quickly become Bishop Gorman’s not-so-secret weapon.

And the senior came through with perhaps his biggest play of the season Friday night.

After Palo Verde rallied from a 14-0 deficit to take a 21-14 lead, Loyd returned a kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown and the Gaels wouldn’t trail again in a 38-28 home win over the Panthers in the Sunset Region semifinals.

Gorman (12-0) will host Cimarron-Memorial (9-2) in the Sunset Region title game at 7 p.m. Friday.

“When we need him, he’s a go-to guy,” Gorman senior Xavier Grimble said of Loyd. “That was a big kick return right there. If we didn’t have that play, I don’t know. That was a lot of momentum in the game.”

Palo Verde had just taken the lead on a 57-yard fumble return by Daniel Godkin with 7:34 left in the first half.

But Loyd scooped up the ensuing squib kick and raced 84 yards, tiptoeing down the sideline for the score. Loyd, a standout basketball point guard, has scored six touchdowns this season while moonlighting on the football field. He has four punt returns for scores, and also has returned an interception for a touchdown.

“John Loyd is a big-time football player,” Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said. “Someone’s going to give that kid an opportunity and he’s going to make them look like a prophet. That guy is absolutely incredible.”

Gorman raced to a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter on a 17-yard TD run by Victor Belen and a 20-yard TD run by Shaquille Powell.

Palo Verde (10-2) got a 1-yard TD run by Sean Mears and then jumped in front by capitalizing on Gorman turnovers. Brandon Wright scooped up a fumble and returned it 30 yards for a TD to tie the game at 14 with 1:10 left in the first quarter.

Godkin’s return then gave the Panthers the lead and the momentum, but it didn’t last long.

“It was like slow (motion),” Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost said of Loyd’s return. I was thinking, 'Are you kidding me, he’s actually going to take this all the way to the house?’ We had a little momentum and that kind of killed us.”

Gorman took the lead for good on a 5-yard TD run by Powell with 39 seconds to go in the first half.

Powell finished with 156 rushing yards on 21 carries to lead the ground attack as the Gaels rushed for 241 yards and four touchdowns.

“We won the game with being able to run the ball right at them,” Sanchez said. “I don’t think anybody thought our approach was going to be to run right at them. People thought we were going to come out and just throw the ball all over the place, and we can, but we’re just as capable of running the football.”

Gorman steamrolled opponents in a weak Southwest League this season, but was in control throughout most of the game against the defending Sunset Region champs.

“Everyone questioned all year long whether or not we’d be able to play in the big game, and I think our kids answered it well tonight,” Sanchez said.

this is sad wrote on November 18, 2009 08:45 AM: I THINK THE RJ AND NEVADA PREPS SHOULD SUSPEND ALL BLOGS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ASAP. I'VE WATCHED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT THIS BLOGOSHPERE IS NOTHING BUT A WEBSITE DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS AND ADULTS TO SPEW HATRED AND LIES ABOUT EACH OTHERS PROGRAMS. DOESN'T HELP THE STUDENT ATHLETES, COACHES OR PARENTS TO LET PEOPLE DO THIS TO OUR SPORTS COMMUNITY AND FRANKLY ITS HAVING A NEGATIVE AFFECT ON HOW ATHLETICS IN OUR VALLEY IS PERCEIVED. DO THE RIGHT THING RJ AND NEVADA PREPS AND SHUT THIS BLOG STUFF FOR HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS DOWN! ALL OF IT! IF YOU REALLY CARED ABOUT THESE KIDS, YOU'LL DO IT. IF ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS HITS TO THE WEBSITE AND USING THAT AS A TOOL TO SELL ADS TO YOUR ADVERTISERS, THEN THAT'S PLAIN WRONG AND YOU KNOW IT.

Another fine example as to how Gorman recruits and pads the grades so these kids are eligible. Come on "BG Player" there is always room for one more recruited player at Gorman! If you don't take him Palo Verde will!

Go win your Nevada State Championship with your bought players! Maybe you should do what Findley Prep does and only seek out top team from around the US with your Las Vegas Valley all star team. You want to be the best you have to play the best! Coaches gaurd your players because I am sure Pole Verde will be recruiting them now that they lost a game to Gorman!

Uninvolved Player/Student wrote on November 17, 2009 07:36 PM: Whether these kids have been recruited or not, they are the best we have in Vegas, and their accomplishments should be applauded, not looked down upon because they play for a rival school or not. I have friends that go to Gorman and they work harder than any others I have ever met. Since they have the work ethic that we all desire, should they be punished? I don't think so. What makes a Gorman kid more privileged than another? I believe all schools have a weightroom, a field, and 99% of the time, a coach too. What makes Gorman different is the striving to be great. So stop hating on those who are the best because that will get you no where instead strive to be the best you can be. As Winston Churchill once said: " I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat."

JWJ wrote on November 17, 2009 07:16 AM: Gormans Motto "If you can't beat'em, then offer them a scholorship"! Gorman you want to known as a good team, then all your non league games should be against good teams from out of state! You should be begging the NIAA and CCSD to put you in the Northwest league to prove your dominance! Quit taking pride in beating Pahrump, Clark, Bonanza and Western. Bottom line. Sure you have great academics and great faucilities but you steal players! And the sad thing is that you are proud of how you win. Also shame on the RJ for making you sound like some great team when the league you are in is the worst in Vegas! Some of the schools in that league would struggle with Pop Warner teams! Enjoy your State Championship! But always remember that it was a bought team!

I'm sure if he was on a scholarship he wouldn't have stopped showing up to the varsity practices when called up for scout team even if he could only stand on the sidelines. He would be hangin all over Sanchez if he had a free ride.
