SUNSET BOYS: Cimarron dismisses Western

POSTED: Saturday February 20, 2010

Sunset Region Playoffs
At Palo Verde
Monday's Games
Desert Oasis vs. Bishop Gorman, 4:40 p.m.

Cimarron-Memorial vs. Palo Verde, 6:30 p.m.
Tuesday's Game
Championship, 6:30 p.m.

It took Western a week of lawsuits, appeals and hearings to get into the Sunset Region boys basketball tournament.

It took Cimarron-Memorial’s Kevin Olekaibe only a frantic third quarter to knock the Warriors out of the postseason.

Olekaibe scored 19 points in third quarter as the Spartans earned an 86-69 road win over Western in the region quarterfinals on Saturday.

“Kevin, he does not want this to end,” Cimarron coach Steve Boyack said. “He’s had a great year. He steps up when he has to, or all the time. Nineteen in that third quarter was huge for us.”

Western originally missed the postseason after forfeiting four games for using an ineligible player. But Western filed a last-second appeal on the night before the Sunset tournament originally was scheduled to start, and an independent hearing officer restored two of those wins on Friday.

That was enough to put the Warriors into the playoffs, but Olekaibe and company made sure it wouldn’t save their season.

Olekaibe finished with 42 points and five of just about everything else: rebounds, steals, assists and dunks.

“(Olekaibe), he played amazing tonight. He’s a great player,” Western coach Chip Nelson said.

Cimarron (21-9) plays Palo Verde (20-3) at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Palo Verde. Bishop Gorman (26-2) plays Desert Oasis (16-9) in the other semifinal at 4:40 p.m.

Western scored six points in the final 1:07 of the first half to close to within 38-31. But Cimarron opened the second half with a 15-4 run to take control.

“That was kind of the focus of the halftime was to come out and not let them make a run, becuase they’d taken the momentum away from us,” Boyack said. “We had to regain it quickly, and they responded.”

Ben Dorsey added 16 points for Cimarron, and Leo Bermudez had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Bermudez and

Erik Brewer controlled the paint, with Brewer totaling 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Both coaches admitted it was difficult to prepare for basketball this week. The tournament originally was scheduled to begin on Wednesday, and Cimarron was supposed to play Desert Oasis in the first round before Western’s forfeits were overturned.

“It’s been a roller coaster,” Boyack said. “And uncertainty has made it tough. But the kids responded well.”

Nelson said it was difficult to get his players ready to play after they originally were told their season was over.

“The kids were down and obvioulsy upset that they were out, and things just seemed to drag on, and drag on, and drag on with so much uncertainty that it was tough to get them to bounce back,” Nelson said.

“We obviously had a pretty eventful week and a lot of distractions. I know that it’s really no excuse, especially since everybody basically had a lot of distractions.”

Kentrell Washington had 23 points and 12 rebounds for Western.

Desert Oasis 71, Cheyenne 69 — At Cheyenne, Zach Bolenhausen scored on a rebound as time expired to give the Diamondbacks the win over the Desert Shields.

Anthony Lianzo missed a shot with 3 seconds left and Bolenhausen grabbed the rebound over two Cheyenne defenders and hit the game winner in one motion to give Desert Oasis its first basketball playoff victory.

Cameron Mich’l sparked the Diamonbacks in the second half, scoring 26 of his game-high 28 points, including four 3-pointers. Lianzo finished with 20 points.

Jaylen Henry led Cheyenne with 18 points. Chris McCall had 17 points, Victor Bermudez 12 and Brian Organ 10 for the Desert Shields.

Bishop Gorman 90, Arbor View 51 — At Bishop Gorman, Anson Winder scored the first nine points of the game and finished with 33 to lead the Gaels over the Aggies.

Winder drained eight 3-pointers and finished 12-for-17 from the floor. Shabazz Muhammad went 10-for-14 from the field, finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds for Gorman.

Maiscei Grier had 14 points, and Darington Banks added 12 points to lead Arbor View.

Palo Verde 87, Spring Valley 78 — At Palo Verde, Davion Person had 25 points to lead the Panthers over the Grizzlies.

Moses Morgan added 16 points for Palo Verde.

Corey Clement led Spring Valley with 24 points.

@facts yo bro let it go your talking bout get a life but your arguing with some unknown person on here just chill he's getting the best of you just because your responding were talking bout HS sports here not you 2 little person problems so back on HS basketball Shabazz is older than few but it isn't his fault that he is. I heard his father held him back so he could be like just like how Reggie Bullock's parents did for some who dont know Reggie his parents held him back in MS so he could be better And in Nevada they really don't look at age they look at years if i started school when i was 16 and graduated at 19 or 20 i am granted to get my 4 years of eligibility. If i am held back in HS then of course that 5th year either i go to Burk or whatever or they'll let me finish but i never had that problem but if Shabazz is really 17 as a sophomore then he still gets his 4 yrs Well good luck to Canyon Springs and Bishop Gorman. Represent southern Nevada.

I don't care how old Shabazz he's good that's all there is to it..It doesn't really even matter. Som of the people on here need to be with the media because your ginving these guys WAY to much attention I mean really is your lif that boring that you have to argue about someone elses. But whatever all I know is there is going to be one of the biggest upsets ever in the state championship this week Canyon Springs will beat Gorman. No doubt about it playa.

Next year every team will refuse to play Gorman. They lost to the only teams they played that could recruit like them, Findley Prep and Mater Dei. They don't have to play by CCSD rules, and we don't have to put up with it. They brag because they dominate the state when they are the only school that can legally recruit. We are sick of it. BOYCOTT GORMAN!

Written by: Boycott Gorman! on Tuesday, Feb.23, 2010 at 7:39 AM

@ good education...Even if you put the ' as you call it (most of us with an education call it an "apostrophe") in it, it would still be wrong. It would be wrong because you put A before Bishop Gorman you dummy! "A Bishop Gorman's education..." still doesn't make any sense. For the record, I did say that I didn't say anything that wasn't acceptable on a blog site. Last time I checked, "ain't" is very acceptable here. By the way, you left your famous ' as you call it out of "isn't", you DUMMY!

another reason why GORMAN is so great is because I feel safe there. in public school i honestly feel something bad might happen everyday. jus my opinion but i think its true

Written by: bg on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 11:20 PM

to "The real reason we hate on.." all that you said was pretty accurate. I go to gorman and we do, do all that stuff according to my knowledge. I feel lucky that my parents can afford me and my siblings to go there and we dont qualify for financial aid...And i'll admit i get cocky when it comes to athletics but who wouldnt be if you win so much.

Written by: GORMAN on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 11:17 PM

People don't hate Bishop Gorman because they are good. They hate them because of the elitist attitude that their athletes, student body, parents and alumni give off. Not all of them, but most of them that attend athletic events. As for the recruiting, they legally can by the NIAA rules. Some of the public schools do it also by bending the rules or giving false student information. Bishop Gorman just doesn't hide it (elitism). We all know that there are no athletic scholarships at Bishop Gorman, but many athletes do recieve financial help from wealthy alumni who want an elite athletic program there. Finally the academic side, they control the size of classes, only accept good students, and kick out the undesirables. Another true advantage over public schools (having nothing to do with teachers or curriculum).

@ facts....How should I have phrased my comment? Sorry that the ' was left out. But "Aint" still isnt a word. :)

Written by: good education on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 6:26 PM

To Wow: You are not the only commentor that has made that suggestion about Gorman and the league. Apparently it all comes down to money. Dont ask me how the other schools benefit from the money surrounding Gorman but that's what a Gorman fan responded back to me.

Meanwhile, you said...I hope that you are not the product of a Bishop Gormans education! Gormans? Didn't you mean to say Gorman without the s? As I said before GET A LIFE!

You can be a 19 yr old senior and still be eligible. You can't turn 20 by the start of senior year.

Written by: info guy on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 3:19 PM

Really in the know - I, too, went to Gorman. To say that I would know if my children were gifted athletically is besides the point. My kids are all very young, pre-school, kind of hard to tell their athletic aptitude to tell the truth. To say that Gorman offers only academic scholarships is pretty far fetched. They offer financial aid based on need. When recruited athletes receive this aid because their athletic ability it would qualify as a scholarship in my book.

I previosly considered allowing my son to attend Bishop Gorman High School. They have great opportunities for the student atheletes, way better than my son would get at any public school. But when I saw several different sports coaches and athletes act in the manner that they act, I thought WOW and thats a catholic school. While I realize that to go to Gorman or to teach at Gorman you dont have to be Catholic, but seriously if you ARE a Catholic School. I would think that the administration for the school would not allow there students and staff to act in the mannor that they do. As far as the recruting aspect Bishop Gorman they do because they are allowed. And until either the Coaches or CCSD do something about it they will continue to. Why not make the suggestion that Bishop Gorman can play games with all of the public schools, but not be included in league play? It is unfortunate that coaches have to try and prepare there team members to play a game that it is unlikely they will win. But please remember everyone CAN be beaten. I realize its hard for school who barley have funding for there teams to go against kids that have the best equipment, trainers, facilities, coaching staff and unlimited resources. Go in with your heart and the talent that you have and play to the best of your abilities. Congratulations to all of the teams that made the playoffs. Good luck to everyone!

Shabazz is 17. Not 16 like somebody from Gorman tried to lie and say. And not 18 like somebody tried to hate and say. He's 17 like a soph who's been held back should be. He's not the first, he ain't the last. Get over it. Get a life. Get your son better!

I was at a Gorman game awhile back and heard a couple older gentlemen talking about Shabazz they said that he was held back in grade school for some unknown reason. They were not sure if it was one or two years. I guess they said he had good grades so they only reason they came up with so that he would be bigger than the kids in his high school class once he got there. Whatever happened the kid is good whether he's a sophomore or junior or whatever the kid can play. Is there an age limitation in high school sports by the way?

Written by: Heard in rthe stands on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 11:44 AM

Landon is a nice little piece of work but he plays 2A Kevin goes against the best in Southern Nevada and is in the toughest league in Las Vegas. Dont get me wrong Landon is good but he can probably just shoot better than Kevin and you have to really think about that but Kevin does everything for that team he leads in assists steals and of course points. He's a better scorer and overall player than Landon. I am knocking not Landon but stop hating on Kevin. Its funny you said that look at Kevin numbers and look at Landon Kevin is top in the NATION in scoring lol C'MON SON!!!!Kevin put up 50 twice 40 like 5 times 30 like 8 or 9 times he hasnt scored under 20. And Gorman did not practice Sunday esp if they already beat the team by 40 both times stop hating on BG please makes no sense and oh yeah Shabazz Muhammad can buy cigarettes but he still nice tho OLD but nice.

Written by: OOOkkk on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 11:33 AM

There is a rule (NAC 386.816) in the NIAA rulebook Prohibiting activities on Sundays, including practices. It is on page 84 of the Handbook available on NIAA.com.

In the know, you are so far out of the the know it isn't even funny. First, if your children are going to be or are gifted athletically you would already know and see it on a daily basis. Secondly, I don't care if they are top players in state!! show up to gorman and think you don't have to pay tuition. Listening to these comments over the years I went to gorman thinking my boy would get a scholarship for athletics. Wrong they only offer academic scholarships. Ok I can't afford Gorman let me look into financial aid. Well First year they will give you a max of $3,000.00 but the tuition is over $11,000.00. Not a good financial aid package. My mail from the tuition office comes like clock work and every month I'm writing a check so get your facts straight before you start telling lies like you know whats going on. My boy would be welcomed and financially taking care of at 9 out 10 private schools across the country but that tenth school is Gorman and we have to pay.

Written by: really in the know on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 10:29 AM

I don't know what sport you are talking about but if it is basketball get your facts straight. The Gorman basketball team DID NOT practice on Sunday Feb 21, 2010. I don't know where you got your information from. They played Sat. rested Sunday and will kick booty Monday and Tuesday.

Written by: practice where talking bout practice on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 10:2 AM

Although Gorman claims to be a catholic school, the fact of the matter is that less than half the students and faculty are catholic. This is certifiable information which I'm sure Gorman would not like to admit. They would be more properly classified as a private school. Gorman has become the alternative to the CCSD for non-catholic families who do not want their children in the public school system. Truthfully speaking, I will probably consider sending my children there, if I can afford it, as they are a very good college prep school. Of course, if my children are gifted athletically I probably won't have to worry about paying the tuition, which is in the $10 to 15 K range if I'm not mistaken.

Written by: in the know on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 9:45 AM

to Gorman Player, because the Gorman boys team DID practice yesterday, right? I did not say every Sunday - I saud that there is no rules preventing it like there are for CCSD teams.

Written by: on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 8:42 AM

Its so funny how many people hate Gorman. Heck I would hate a school that as of recently is starting to dominate in all sports. Can you guys come up with anything against them other than " oh they recruit". It gets real old, and you show you immature and uneducated you truly are. Cause im pretty sure the public schools dont use zone variances do they? Oh wait they do. And who cares if these kids couldnt go to Gorman if they couldnt catch a ball or Dunk it. They are great kids, everyone of them, and they are getting a better education that anyone from a public school. Just sounds like you are just jealous!

Written by: Blake on Monday, Feb.22, 2010 at 8:35 AM

Kevin is a great player but the best scorer in the state is Landon Littlefield. He had 54 in a playoff game he gets it done on all levels and avg over 20ppg all for years over 2,500 points for his career. And dont say it was done at a small school they play 4a teams in the non conference and I had to turn them away in our tourney cuz other 4a schools did not want to get beat by a small school. Faith won the other division of the Gorman Holiday Tournament and they have beat Faith bad over the last 3 years 6 times never within 10 points and again they dropped that game this year. I have also seen the kid play in the summer and he does the same thing out there. The kid had many D1 offers but he singed with Dixie. Again best score in the state Landon Littlefield. Thanks, G.R.

Oh well i heard from numbers of people that 'Bazz was little older then few and when i say people i mean people that play ball with him and hang with him and Taylor told me he was born in 1991 which makes him how old??? But sorry for my facts i dont wanna start arguments thanks for making that clear ok Well congrats on Taylor signing to UNLV and 'Bazz being in the top 5 keep putting in work Where is J Loyd going???

say what!!!-- no disrespect but your facts are skewed. 'bazz is 16 as a sophomore. And by Taylor i assume you mean Taylor spencer. I go to gorman and he literally just turned 18 2 weeks ago.

kevin is an outstanding scorer and player no one has carried a team like him since names like Prince Fowler,Kevin Gaines,Marcus Banks, guys like them he is not as good as them players overall but what he is doing he will always be remembered.Congrats to Kevin and the spartans Congrats to Gorman,Canyon Springs,Palo, and DO and even to Western and Spring Valley and Foothill Gorman kids cant control that they're good and coaches see potential in them so they can be what they want. I cant stand Gorman but i respect what they do for kids by getting them to college. Yes they cheat but theyre getting kids into schools. I just feel be a little fair because they have a couple of kids who were suppose to graduate already. Shabazz is like 17 or 18 as a sophomore Taylor is 19 like come on but hey both are going to college thats what parents ask for well sorry real long but Good Luck to all the teams still in it

That's because it's the Sabath and Gorman is not really catholic listen to the students at games and the priest(?) that eggs them on. If they were you would not have all the non catholic names going there It would be interesting to know how many Peter's, Luke's Mary's and Joseph's going there. Bless me father for I have sinned I went to Gorman and I'm not Catholic my last confession was!!!!!!!!

You left it all on the court and now the next level awaits you. Christopher J. McCall, I LOVE YOU AND HAVE ENJOYED YOU TREMENDOUSLY! i will ALWAYS be in your corner whether you win or lose. Gorman everyone knows you are good why people hate you is because of the way you do it. Recruit players that are very good in all sports. Give them a free education in return for them plaaying for you. Kids go there because of that fact that they want to win and you do win. If that makes them fell successful it's fine but some day they will learn the real world that not all employers and careers will be that easy. That your management committee's and middle management personal are not picked as potential super stars and you will have to actually perform on your own and not depend on the others. Good luck to you in Reno but Bishop M. up there in Reno is very good. Thursday will be the championship game not Friday you will be playing Canyon on Friday because Mcqueen if not good. You should have no problem with them. Both to Canyon and Gorman have fun a safe trip and good luck.

Funny Guy, you made Mr. Grizz's point for him. Every player at Notre Dame is not catholic. They recruit the best players they can get, regardless of their faith, just like Gorman does. Both schools recruit for their success. Unfortunately, barring a huge upset, everyone else is playing for second place as a result.

Assuming Palo beats CM tomorrow. They cant beat GORMAN...looking at the scores Palo beat Spring Valley by 9 where as GORMAN beat Spring Valley by 25 and 35 this year. And north is simply just weaker. Nobody in Vegas (except Findley Prep) can beat GORMAN!!!!

Written by: BG on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 5:46 PM

Ok guys! Let's leave Western alone. They did what they had to do. They played in the playoffs. They lost. Their season is over, but they will have a good team next year. I am shocked that Cheyenne lost. If it is true about Coach Fair, he is done and will be dismissed. Someone new will be coaching B-ball for Cheyenne next year. Dont be suprise if Gorman dont go all the way. They will get past Desert Oasis, but Palo Verde or CM have the talent to beat Gorman. Up north in Reno, Bishop Manogue destryoed McQueen, 53-24. To be honest with you, there will be an upset special waiting to happen. Don't be suprise if someone from Reno wins it all. They are better up there than you think.

Let this be the last post because this is just crazy. Kevin is one of the best guards in Vegas. If he played on any other good team his percentages wouldn't be as high as it is for the fact that he wouldn't be shooting as much. Hes a shooter and a very good one but he has no choice but to shoot. If he was on Cheyenne, Gorman, Canyon, or Palo's team he wouldn't be shooting as much. He has to carry his team on his back (which is extremely hard by the way) but that wont get you to a state championship. Just look at Evan from foothill. Hes amazing but he just couldn't do it all on his own and Canyon Springs locked Evan up and you cant lock up Canyon Springs because they have a whole team full of Kevin's and Evan's so guarding 1 or 2 specific people doesn't work. You need a squad a whole team that can contribute just as much as he does. or Cheyenne Chris cant do it all or Jaylen but you can stop both of them. You lock Kevin up you lock Cimarron up. They will make it to the third round though..Keep it up Kevin your a baller with potential for NBA.

Written by: C. M. on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 5:21 PM

Mr. Grizz, Do you think that every kid on Notre Dame's football team is Catholic? Don't think so. So, the fact that a kid with the last name if Muhammad is at Gorman proves what? How silly you sound? Why would you say anything about Palo's players? It sounds like you're bitter because your team lost last night.

By the law of averages, if you shoot 30 times a game, you should make half, which would give you thirty points. I don't know if I would call him a shooter because he's extremely streaky. Gunner, yes, shooter, no.

he has to carry his team. You switch any player with him in the city that and that team wont make the playoffs yet alone have the success he has. + if your a shooter you shoot the ball

Olekaibe could have been hot yesterday shooting an alleged 50%. However, I've seen him play about 10 times this season, and he has taken an average of 33 shots per game, which is a large amount for a high school player.

According to Mr.Grizz, you HAVE to be Catholic in order to go to Gorman. Considering I'm of a different faith and I graduated from Gorman, I should probably make sure that my diploma is legit. Thanks for the heads up bro. Next time you post about policies regarding Gorman, make sure that you didn't pull them from your rear end.

Olekaibe had 11 assist to clarify .

Congrats on the playoff win by Desert Oasis but......lets be honest you have no chance against GORMAN

Written by: BG on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 2:44 PM

I do not know why everyone is making an issue of this. Many of the top schools/programs use ineligible players year in and year out and CCSD turns a blind eye to it. As I have said before during football season, the majority of the Bishop Gorman players/athletes are not Catholic and would not be attending this school if they could not catch a football, dunk a basketball, run fast, or jump high. Case in point, last time I looked, the name Shabazz Mohammed was not in the "Good Book". More like on the "No Fly List". And over at Palo Verde, those "student athletes" are nowhere to be seen or found in the community over the weekend or non-school days. What many are calling cheating by Western, I say they improvised and adapted in order to compete with the other so called "clean programs". These are the words of Mr.Grizz!

The Cheyenne coach needs to teach his players manners, 3 of them walked off the court with out shaking Desert Oasis hands. Poor Sportsmanship

this is to " college scout" Kevin is the real deal..one of the best gaurds in the state..his shooting percentage was great. He was hitting on all cylinders, he played a great all around game. He made good decisions offensively and definsively, he got his players involved really well.. But its sad to say that their season will fall short of what their goal is. it will be GORMAN vs. Canyon Springs in a shoot out..!! I like canyon with the upset.!

Desert Oasis came up big against a VERY TALENTED CHEYENNE team. Cheyenne played well, but DO simply took it from them with stellar play from the entire team. In the first half, Cheyenne's #11 took DO's lead scorer Cameron Mich'l out of his game and Anthony Lianzo stepping up with about 15 points in the half to keep it close. Cameron Jefferson got in foul trouble early and even without their anchor in the middle, Zach Bobenhausen and Mich'l stepped up their interior defensive intensity until his return. Derrick Atkins was a rock at point guard and hit some big shots as well! Nick Cruz played aggressive and hit a huge momentum changing three in the 4th. Coach Gibson made some good 1/2 time adjustments and Cameron Mich'l lit it up in the third with 19-21 points causing Cheyenne's coach to take #11 off him. Cheyenne had no answer for Mich'l and he carried his play into the fourth quarter to end with 26 points in the second half and 28 overall. Cameron Jefferson, played amazingly aggressive even with 4 fouls throughout the 4th quarter and made some strong shots and passes to set his team up. Jefferson is one of the best passing centers in the league. Bobenhausen, the heart of the team, who has a gift for being in the right place at the perfect time hit the winning shot...NICE ZACH! CONGRATS D.O. ON WINNING YOUR FIRST PLAYOFF GAME IN ONLY TWO YEARS! Both teams played their heart out!

All of them unless it's a rebound for some else then they pass it back to him and he shoots again and again and again

Hey Fan - Have some coffee with that bitterness this morming! LMAO To 'Dad' I'm sure any dad who writes such sincere words about his son has told him that and more plenty of times. Obviously 'fan' needed more than he got. Sons love to hear it and see it no matter how. I know, I have 4 sons. :)

Wow Chuck Dillweed - did you figure that out all by yourself? One team gets to recruit, the other doesn't. The recruiting team wins. You are a genius. NOT!

Written by: ? on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 8:30 AM

wow Western u let 1 young man beat u on YOUR COURT. thats EMBARASSING.... hey DAD i hoped u told your son first, instead of posting your heart felt comments on nevadapreps.com. sons love to hear things from their dads, not reading it on the internet......Desert Oasis recruit some kids from western, maybe u might have a chance against GORMON..LOL....and Palo just cause u beat cimarron during regular season dont mean nothing...come to play or else Kevin will go wild on your behind. HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND EVERYONE....LMAO

Written by: fan on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 8:20 AM

it has been my greatest pleasure watching my son grow up both on and off the court. His team came up short tonite...not due to effort tho. You left it all on the court and now the next level awaits you. Christopher J. McCall, I LOVE YOU AND HAVE ENJOYED YOU TREMENDOUSLY! i will ALWAYS be in your corner whether you win or lose. I've learned a lot about myself watching you and you have taught me some things about yourself i didn't know. Rings aren't easy to come by. but take what you've learned here, thru these seasons, and apply them during your next journey. love you, dad.

Gorman is winning it all. Your season comes to an end Monday D.O. Gorman has beat you by forty plus both times they played you in the regular season.

Written by: Chuck Dillary on Sunday, Feb.21, 2010 at 12:39 AM

D.O.... No one gave you any chance to bet Cheyenne .. But guess what?? You went to their house a hostile place to play and beat them.. And western.. Maybe you should have played your inneligible player tonight an you might have won :) karma sucks huh? Cheaters never prosper.. But I guess everything happens for a reason.. And we play Monday and you get to watch :) and pay 5 dollars for the game! D.O. You know!

macy grier is an excellent player and is the overall best on the terrible arbor view team.he has excellent vision of the court and a wonderful knowledge of the game.not to mention a pure jump shot and clutch skills.darrington banks just needs to stop playing selfish and forcing up disgusting shots that are not necessary especially when grier is wide open.
