Bishop Gorman and Cimarron-Memorial were the top baseball teams in Southern Nevada most of the season, eventually meeting in the Class 4A state final.
So it was no surprise Friday night when the Gaels and Spartans dominated the Southern Nevada Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Game.
A combined 12 players from the two teams sparked the Sunset Region seniors to a 21-6 rout of their Sunrise counterparts in nine innings at College of Southern Nevada’s Morse Stadium.
Cimarron infielder/pitcher Taylor Doyle belted a three-run homer, drew a walk and was hit by a pitch on the way to winning the Sunset Most Valuable Player award.
Sunrise MVP honors were won by Silverado outfielder/pitcher Braden Keathley, who went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple, two walks and two runs scored.
Gorman’s Joey Rickard led off the game with a home run to left field, and the Sunset never trailed.
Doyle’s three-run homer highlighted a fourth inning in which the Sunset sent 15 batters to the plate and scored 11 times to take a 16-0 lead.
Cimarron’s Kris Kaplan was 2-for-2 with a double, triple, two RBIs and two runs for the Sunset, and Spartans teammates Kody Gorden and Brad Oswald had two hits each.
Gorman’s R.J. Santigate went 2-for-2 with three RBIs for the Sunset, which outhit the Sunrise 20-8. Legacy’s Chase Skinner clubbed a solo homer and scored twice.
Sunset starter Stephen Manthei of Gorman struck out the side in the only inning he pitched to get the win.
Foothill’s Jordan Mathis had a solo home run for the Sunrise.
Before the game, Las Vegas Baseball Academy founder Mike Martin and former Rancho coach and athletic director Tom Coleman were inducted into the SNBCA Hall of Fame.

Sameguy are you really a guy. You seem to be in love with sheff, you can't praise him enough it seems. MMMMMMMMMMM You seem to have this soap opera drama thing down PRETTY good. I was told that the clown phrase came from gorman a few years ago. It started as a reference toward public schools. Better than others looking down your high and mighty nose, huh! Get a life.
Oh Yea, wrote on May 31, 2009 11:13 AM: I guess we will see how good a coach Sheff is now that his meal tickets are gone. wrote on May 31, 2009 09:09 AM: I imagine Legion is garbage on Saturday because "Gorman's Future" got beat on Friday. Very nearly twice. Same Guy! wrote on May 30, 2009 11:51 PM: How about Hubel and his clowns in the same dugout with Sheff and his soldiers! Piece of humble pie eh? Bet it was tough on Hubel and his boys! I mean Sheff and his coaches talking baseball and breaking down players and Hubel and his clowns sitting around on buckets not understanding anything they were talking about. They should have had thier tape recorders out and took good notes! Ha wish i could been a fly on that wall. Good season and congrats to all the boys it was a fun season! Off to summer ball and the garbage legion thats played in this town! wrote on May 30, 2009 09:48 AM: no one from gv playedddd Baseball Mom wrote on May 30, 2009 08:15 AM: All the seniors that played, not only in last nights game, but throughout their high school years should be proud of themselves. They have committed themselves to a game that they love and we all loved watching them play. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU! Good Luck in your futures and remember these times fondly! |
