3A REGIONALS: Virgin Valley boys, Boulder City girls take titles

Danny Medina scored twice in the span of a minute in the first half Saturday to lead Virgin Valley’s boys to a 2-0 win over Boulder City (8-8-3) in the Class 3A Southern League soccer championship match in Mesquite.

Medina scored in the 16th and 17th minutes, and the Bulldogs’ defense took care of the rest.

“Boulder City came out and threw everything they had at us,” said Virgin Valley coach Bob Snell. “Our defense really stepped up.”

Miguel Martinez made five saves to earn the shutout for the Bulldogs (12-9-2), who will play Sparks in a state semifinal Friday in Reno.

GIRLS

Boulder City 5, Moapa Valley 0 — Ashlyn Jorgensen had two goals and an assist, and Jeanette McQuillan also scored twice as the Eagles blanked the Pirates (5-10-1) in the girls title match.

Tasja Toumasis added a goal, and Gabriela Correales had two assists for Boulder City (10-6).

Mikaela Stevens recorded the shutout for the Eagles, who will play South Tahoe in a state semifinal Friday in Reno.
