3A STATE: Virgin Valley's Lewis pulls away to win second straight title

Virgin Valley junior Randi Lewis carded a 2-over-par 73 at Falcon Ridge on Wednesday to easily repeat as the individual champion at the Class 3A state golf tournament.

Lewis, who won last year’s state crown while playing for Boulder City, entered the final round with a four-stroke lead over South Tahoe’s Morgan Murphy and a five-shot edge over Boulder City’s Jordan Syler and pulled away from the field.

Lewis had a 36-hole total of 7-over 150 to win by 15 strokes over Syler, who shot 83 on Wednesday. Lowry’s Cortney Kiser was third at 167. Murphy shot an 89 in the final round to finish fourth at 170.

Elko, which placed five golfers in the top 12, won the team competition, shooting 358 on Wednesday to finish at 721. Lowry carded a 366 in the final round to finish second at 743, and Virgin Valley took third at 765 after shooting 380 in the final round.
